What this guide covers

Desk analysis

This guide lists companies only where an operator’s own page, a government record or a named publication ties them to a Tennessee location. It is not a ranking or a census of every AI firm in the state; it is the subset the desk can trace to evidence.

Our analysis: a company’s presence in Tennessee can mean an operating campus, a purchased site, a power contract or a research partnership. Each entry below names the kind of evidence that exists so those categories are not blurred.

xAI in Memphis

The Greater Memphis Chamber announced on June 5, 2024 that xAI’s supercomputer would occupy a former manufacturing facility in Memphis, calling it the largest capital investment by a new-to-market company in the city’s history. [Greater Memphis Chamber] The Commercial Appeal identifies the building as the former Electrolux plant at 3231 Paul R. Lowry Road. [The Commercial Appeal]

In March 2025 the Chamber announced that xAI bought a one-million-square-foot property in Southwest Memphis. [Greater Memphis Chamber] DatacenterDynamics reported the parcels sit off Tulane Road in Whitehaven. [DatacenterDynamics] MLGW’s July 22, 2025 statement says it is not supplying power to Colossus 2 at that address. [Memphis Light, Gas and Water]

Meta in Gallatin

Meta broke ground on its Gallatin Data Center in Sumner County in August 2020, describing a 982,000-square-foot campus and an investment of more than $800 million. [Meta] The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development announced the project the same day. [Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development]

On November 14, 2024 Meta announced that Gallatin was serving traffic, that it supports over 100 operational jobs, and that the fully built facility will represent more than $1.5 billion in Tennessee. [Meta]

Google in Montgomery County

Google lists Montgomery County, Tennessee among its data center locations. [Google] Its August 2025 post on the Kairos Power agreement says the TVA grid powers its data centers in Montgomery County. [Google]

Our analysis: Google’s own pages are the primary record for this campus. The desk does not infer power or headcount figures Google has not published.

Energy and computing partners

Kairos Power, Google and TVA announced on August 18, 2025 that Kairos’s Hermes 2 plant in Oak Ridge would deliver up to 50 MW to TVA’s grid, with operations scheduled for 2030. [Kairos Power] DOE announced on October 27, 2025 that AMD and HPE would deliver the Lux and Discovery systems at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. [U.S. Department of Energy]

How to read these records

Desk analysis

Our analysis: keep four dates apart for every record: the date a source was published, the date the desk reviewed it, the date a decision or approval took effect, and the date anything actually started operating. A review date on this site never turns an older announcement into new news, and a planned figure is never presented as a delivered one.

Our analysis: when a field such as investment, power or employment is not disclosed in a cited record, the desk leaves it blank rather than estimating it. A blank is unknown, not zero, and readers should ask the controlling party for the actual document before relying on any number. County boundaries come from the Census Gazetteer so that every record can be tied to one of Tennessee’s 95 counties. [U.S. Census Bureau]

Our analysis: corrections are welcome. If a cited page changes, moves or is superseded by a newer agency decision, the desk updates the record with the new source and its own date rather than silently rewriting the old claim. Readers making a consequential decision should consult the controlling agency record and qualified professionals.

Frequently asked questions

Which companies have confirmed Tennessee data centers?
In this register, Meta (Gallatin) and Google (Montgomery County) confirm operating data centers on their own pages, and xAI’s Memphis sites are documented through the Greater Memphis Chamber, MLGW and local reporting.
Is xAI’s one-million-GPU figure a confirmed installation?
No. The Greater Memphis Chamber described a minimum of one million GPUs as the planned expansion; it is a stated plan, not a verified installed count.
